But won't accessories like hooks and straps negatively affect grip strength? Our view is that it depends. If you are training back with volume, then grip should not be your limiting factor. By all means, build up to your working weight without assistance but never compromise your form or limit your rep range because of grip failure towards the end of a set - you are simply bottlenecking your overall development. On the flipside, if you are working with a weight that you can comfortably handle or attempting a new 1RM under competition rules, then the hooks and the straps should stay in the bag.
